Petrol-bomb flames licked at the bodywork of a police Nyala armoured vehicle as it manoeuvred through a barricaded street in Meyerton, south of Joburg.

Not even the presence of Vaal resident and Gauteng MEC for Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture Nelisiwe Mbatha-Mthimkhulu could calm the Vaal town's angry residents yesterday.

SOUTH Africa has been gripped by a wave of violent service provision protests in three provinces, with fears that it might escalate and spill over into other provinces.

The protests in recent weeks depict a government still treading water in the race to keep democracy afloat, analysts say.

Anger against inadequate municipal services has boiled over after President Jacob Zuma's administration was elected, under pressure to deliver on election promises.

Diepsloot was plunged into darkness on Sunday night after a housing protest turned violent.

Roads were barricaded with burning tyres and furniture, large rocks littered the streets, and on several occasions, police resorted to firing rubber bullets at the unruly crowd. Criminals took advantage of the chaos as they looted shops.

A resident was brutally killed at an RDP settlement in Ekurhuleni, allegedly by Red Ants guarding new houses against illegal occupation.

But this assertion has been denied by the Gauteng Department of Housing, which had contracted the Red Ants and who said the death was a result of a fight between members of the community over occupation of houses.
