Grahamstown UPM to picket opening of Parliament on Zuma's 500 000 jobs

Update:13:00, 11 February 2009 - UPM Comrades Arrested

Ayanda Kota from the UPM in Grahamstown, along with Vuyisele Mafemuka, from the UPM in Cape Town, have been arrested while picketing outside parliament. When they asked what the charges were they were pepper sprayed at point blank range and they have since been pepper sprayed repeatedly.

They are currently in a police van and Ayanda still has his phone on him. They don’t yet know which station they will be taken too. Ayanda’s number is 078 625 6462. Please spread the word. The media need to know and, also, people in Cape Town who can offer quick and practical solidarity – legal support, public protest, a physical presence at the police station etc.

UNEMPLOYED PEOPLE’S MOVEMENT CALLS FOR R2000.00 GUARANTEED INCOME FOR THE UNEMPLOYED PEOPLE OF SOUTH AFRICA

We have read with dismay the weekend news that Julius Malema has profited from more than R130-million worth of tenders in just two years. The projects range from road and pavement construction bulk water and upgrading cemeteries.

This country is still recovering from the Arms Deal saga that cost tax payers not less than R25-38 billion for the benefit of the few.

Our government is corrupt and fraudulent beyond repairs. Yet our country remains the most unequal in the world. Many people live in permanent poverty and millions are unemployed for most of their adult lives.

A paper delivered by the Convenor of the Unemployed People’s Movement at the meeting held at Rhodes University, Politics Department, Grahamstown on the 22 January 2010.

The Chairperson, Rhodes University Staff Members and students, distinguished guests, militants of the Unemployed People’s Movement, ladies and gentlemen please receive my revolutionary greetings. Revolution is no tea party or a gathering of friends; those who pursue it do so under cruel and hostile circumstances. At times we wonder and we want to quit. Our undying love for our people, our country and our freedom give us the strength to continue.
