eThekwini Municipality forced to recognise Abahlali baseKhenana 109

 On 13 February the Durban High Court granted us an interdict against the eThekwini Municipality’s repeated violent and illegal attacks on residents of eKhenana land occupation in Cato Crest. The Court directed the municipality’s Land Invasion Unit and Abahlali leadership to hold a site inspection. The inspection was disturbed by the local ANC councillor Mzi Ngiba last week. Residents face more evictions in their new community

Families who were evicted from Cato Crest in Durban have cleared space in a nearby forest to build themselves Ekhenana – a “Place of Hope”. Though they have been evicted several times they say they are prepared to “die” for their new homes.

The last eviction was on Tuesday and soon after the land invasion unit had left, the residents quickly put up their homes again.  Continue reading

Abahlali took to the streets in Cato Crest this morning

Today at 3 am Abahlali baseMjondolo in Cato Crest took to the street and blockaded Vusi Mzimela Road and the Jan Smuts Highway.

For a long time the community has been side-lined by the Ward Councillor when it comes to providing basic services, including those which are urgently required for basic human dignity and safety. The community has been living in the area without electricity, proper water and toilets. People are raising children in these dangerous conditions.  Continue reading

Judgment on the Legality of a 2013 Shooting by the Anti-Land Invasions Unit to be Handed Down Tomorrow

On Sunday 22 September 2013 Nkosinathi Mngomezulu was shot, multiple times, with live ammunition during an illegal and violent eviction carried out against the Marikana Land Occupation in Cato Crest by the Anti-Land Invasions Unit, acting for the eThekwini Municipality. The eviction was carried out despite court interdicts prohibiting evictions. After he was shot Mngomezulu spent months in the ICU division at King Edward hospital. He was chained to the bed and always accompanied by a police officer during visiting hours.  Continue reading
