Statement on the Assassination of S’fiso Ngcobo

On Saturday our branch in eKukhanyeni, in Marianhill, held a very successful and well attended assembly. On Tuesday night, at around 7:30 pm, our chairperson in the branch, S’fisio Ngcobo, stepped out of his home to buy a cooldrink from a shop in a container next to his home. He had received death threats and was aware that it was not safe to be out at night. But the container was just a few meters from his home. He was shot, multiple times, by a group of unknown men. The police were called. They took more than three hours to arrive even though the local police station is nearby. Despite the danger large numbers of comrades immediately gathered at Ngcobo’s home.  Continue reading

On Sunday 11th August 2017 Abahlali baseMjondolo will be launching a branch in eMasenseni in Marianhill in the hostile ward 15. The Times: Man dies in Durban ‘war zone’ land invasion clash

A man has died in clashes between the eThekwini Municipality’s security services and shack dwellers in eMansenseni‚ near Mariannhill‚ west of Durban.

Several people were also injured in the incident.

Shack dwellers’ movement Abahlali baseMjondolo described the skirmish as a “serious attack” and said the scene looked like “a war zone”.

In a statement issued on Tuesday night‚ the movement said that members of the Land Invasion Unit had attempted to disperse a crowd.  Continue reading

Durban Police say they are investigating a murder case after a 29-year-old man was shot dead – allegedly by security guards who accompanied eThekwini Municipality’s Land Invasion Unit to demolitions in Mariannhill.

According to police, the Land Invasion Unit had been demolishing shacks at the Mansenseni Informal Settlement yesterday when community members tried to stop them.   Continue reading

One death and several injuries in Marianhill, three arrests in Kranskop

Today we came under serious attack from the Land Invasions Unit in eMansenseni in Marianhill. One person is confirmed dead, two are in a critical condition in hospital and a number of others are injured – all shot in the back. It was a war zone. The Land Invasions Unit didn’t talk to anyone. They just fired live ammunition. The intention was clearly to kill, to teach a lesson.

There was also an eviction in Kranskop resulting in three arrests. Continue reading
