Jo’burg: Four settlements march on Minister Sisulu

PRESS RELEASE

Communities March to Minister of Housing tomorrow – 27 SEPTEMBER 2007

In the past months the squatter communities of Protea South (Soweto), Kliptown (Soweto), Thembelihle (Lenasia South), and Thembisa (Kempton Park) have undertaken protest action to raise their demands for the following basic services:

HOUSING!

LAND!

WATER & ELECTRICITY!

AN END TO FORCED REMOVALS!

AN END TO POLICE BRUTALITY AGAINST THE POOR (rubber bullets, arbitrary detentions of community leaders, and assaults).

The local councillors have not heard us; the premier of Gauteng has not heard us; now we are taking the struggle to the national Minister of Housing.

The above mentioned communities will embark on a protest march to the offices of the National Minister of Housing in Tshwane/Pretoria tomorrow, 27 September.

The marchers hope to arrive in Pretoria around 13h00.

The Media is invited to cover this event and be witness to the struggles of the poor as they seek what is enshrined in the Constitution and has been promised to them by politicians since 1994. Thirteen years of living with the indignity of poverty, neglect, hunger, homelessness and insecurity of tenure is a long time.

Enough is enough!

This march has been organised by the Landless People’s Movement (Gauteng)
