Abahlali baseMjondolo to Launch Another New Branch

New AbM Branch to be Launched at Siyanda Section B on Saturday 7 March 2009

Despite all the hardship currently faced by Abahlali baseMjondolo and in shack settlements all over Durban the movement will be launching another new branch in Siyanda at Section B. The community is tired of the empty promises by the municipality and the negligences of the Department of Housing which delays the process of access to adequate houses. The fact that the community is waiting for houses doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t be provided with the basic infrastructures like water, toilets, electricity etc while they wait. This infrastructure is basic – it is necessary for people’s safety and dignity.

This community feel like they are the forgotten citizens. Every time when they try to make queries about their future the municipality says they ‘don’t appear on the municipality database’. But when the politicians want to campaign for the upcoming election they suddenly know that this community does exist.

This community is prepared to fight this thing with the help of the movement and to show the municipality and their councillor that they do exist and that they do qualify for better houses and for basic services while they wait for housing.

The new branch, which will be the second Abahlali baseMjondolo branch in Siyanda, will be launched tomorrow:

Date: 07-03-09
Place: Siyanda Mazulu School
Time: 15:00 pm.
