S’fiso Ngcobo, our chairperson in eKukhayeni, was assassinated this evening by unknown gunmen.

We will be able to provide more details on this assassination in the coming hours. Right now comrades are rushing to the family home.

Ndumiso Mnguni, who was shot by the security detail for the Anti-Land Invasion Unit earlier today in the Foreman Road settlement in Clare Estate, is still in hospital, fighting for his life. Continue reading

The armed forces working for the eThekweni Municipality continue to relate to impoverished black people in the city like an army of occupation, especially when poor people are organised outside of the ruling party. Today at 11 am the notoriously violent Anti-Land Invasion Unit demolished Mr Ndumiso Mnguni’s house in our Foreman Road branch. This was a brazenly illegal and criminal act. Continue reading

On Thursday, police in Durban used teargas and rubber bullets to disperse an angry crowd of Foreman Road residents, who picketed in the streets after eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede failed to arrive for a meeting with the community.

Residents of the Foreman Road informal settlement in Durban were promised building materials and the chance to plan a way forward with the mayor after a devastating fire razed about 800 homes, killing a family of three, over the weekend. When the community learned the mayor had cancelled her visit to the area on Thursday, they blockaded Clare Road in Clare Estate in anger. Residents used the burnt corrugated iron from their shacks, dustbins and rubbish to block the road.     Continue reading

Durban – eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede attended the opening of a sports centre while police and Foreman Road informal settlement community members clashed over promises she apparently made.

Gumede was at the opening of a sports centre in Waterloo near Verulam, north of Durban, while police and the community clashed after building material that the municipality promised, weren’t delivered.   Continue reading

Mzimasi Nomvete was sound asleep when he smelt smoke and heard screams just metres from his home.

The 35-year-old resident of Foreman’s Road Settlement in Clare Estate, Durban, heard calls of “fire” early on Sunday morning, waking in a panic.

“People were screaming and saying ‘they are burning’. It was hard to realise what was happening. It happened so quickly.”  Continue reading
