S’fiso Ngcobo, our chairperson in eKukhayeni, was assassinated this evening by unknown gunmen.

The armed forces working for the eThekweni Municipality continue to relate to impoverished black people in the city like an army of occupation, especially when poor people are organised outside of the ruling party. On Thursday, police in Durban used teargas and rubber bullets to disperse an angry crowd of Foreman Road residents, who picketed in the streets after eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede failed to arrive for a meeting with the community.

Residents of the Foreman Road informal settlement in Durban were promised building materials and the chance to plan a way forward with the mayor after a devastating fire razed about 800 homes, killing a family of three, over the weekend. When the community learned the mayor had cancelled her visit to the area on Thursday, they blockaded Clare Road in Clare Estate in anger. Durban – eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede attended the opening of a sports centre while police and Foreman Road informal settlement community members clashed over promises she apparently made.

Mzimasi Nomvete was sound asleep when he smelt smoke and heard screams just metres from his home.

The 35-year-old resident of Foreman’s Road Settlement in Clare Estate, Durban, heard calls of “fire” early on Sunday morning, waking in a panic.
