Daily Sun: ‘Jobs for ANC members’ – squatters

“COMMUNITY development jobs are for everyone, not only ANC members!”

These were the angry words of squatters from Foreman Rand informal settlement near Clare Estate, Durban, after they were allegedly excluded from a water project in the area.

They woke up early yesterday morning to prevent nine ANC members who had been chosen to be part of the project from going to work.

Unhappy resident Mnikelo Ndabankulu said the problem started when the local ANC leader called an urgent meeting on Thursday.

“They made it clear that the meeting was only for ANC members, which is why the rest of us didn’t even bother to attend. They had actually called the meeting because they knew they had to hire nine local people to replace old water pipes in the area and they wanted to make sure those jobs went to their own people,” he said.

“We will not allow this project to continue until they follow the correct procedures and also hire people who belong to different political parties.”

Speaking on behalf of the ward committee, Nomusa Ndlovu, however, rubbished the allegations.

“I was the one who went around calling people to that meeting. Some residents swore at me, saying they would not attend the ANC’s corrupt meeting. The people who were hired were those who made the effort to attend the meeting and they just happened to be ANC members,” she said.

Councillor Bhekisisa Ngcobo said he was aware there was conflict among residents over the project. “We can’t allow community development projects to only benefit a few,” he said.
