Abahlali baseMjondolo Press Statement
eNkanini to honour Comrade Soyiso Nkqayini
The murder of Comrade Soyiso Nkqayini, one of the leading militants in the eNkanini land occupation in Cato Manor, and the organiser of our Youth League, has come as a shock at the time when our movement is still fresh from mourning the death of Sbonelo Mpeku who was abducted and killed in the Sisonke Village land occupation in November.
Tomorrow we will gather in eNkanini to honour and respect a cadre who was in the forefront of the struggle for land. Soyiso Nkqayini was a fearless militant who was always courageous and vocal during the tense times when the eNkanini land occupation came under violent attack for the Anti-Land Invasion Unit. He endured a lot in the struggle for the dignity of the impoverished and oppressed. He was a young leader with a lot of potential to become the kind of honourable and brave leader that our country so lacks.
Our movement is encouraged by the bravery the community that has been formed via this land occupation. They have vowed not to stop the occupation. In fact they are now fuelled to be even stronger than before in the struggle for land and dignity.
Those who have thought that they have killed the spirit of the movement have to think again because this movement will continue to grow even under these difficult conditions. We will not be deterred. We will continue to build the democratic power of the oppressed from below.
On the 4th of January we will be going to court to witness justice as the police officer who has been found guilty of the murder of Nqobile Nzuza will be sentenced. On the 24th of January we will be going to court to hold the eThekwini mayor and municipal manager personally liable for continuing to violate the court order that prevented the municipality from evicting and demolishing people’s structures in eNkanini.
The memorial service will be held in eNkanini, Cato Manor tomorrow, Saturday the 23rd of December 2017 at 12:00.
