Abahlali baseMjondolo Press Statement

Finally, there is a breakthrough in the Mabaso case

Samson Mhlanganyelwa Ngubane, a priest who has been the leading force behind the violent attempts to destroy our eKhenana Commune, has been arrested for the assassination of our leader Comrade Nokuthula Mabaso. His brother has also been arrested for the assassination. His son, the notorious Khaya Ngubane, were previously arrested for the assassination of Comrade Ayanda Ngila

Samson Ngubane is also a businessman whose interest is for the use of the land in eKhenana for profit. Initially Ngubane and the local ANC wanted to use that piece of public land to build flats that were going to be sold for private profit.

The arrest of Samson Ngubane has finally taken place after we have made many attempts to get justice for our two comrades that were killed in a space of two months in the commune. We are still waiting for full details surrounding the arrest of Samson Ngubane, but we can confirm that he has been arrested for the murder of Nokuthula Mabaso.

The leadership in eKhenana has been facing constant repression from the local ANC since the land was first occupied. There has been a mafia approach that was organised by the ward councillor Mzi Ngiba to sell houses that are meant for the poorest of the poor. He has also has been imprisoned for murder

We continue to face the oppression from the ANC led government in KwaZulu Natal. We are being killed for organizing outside of the ruling party. We are killed for refusing to be controlled by the ANC. Over the years we have been a target of the ANC for organising autonomy for food sovereignty.

We welcome the arrests, and note that they came as a result of sustained and tenacious struggle.
