unFreedom Day 2009 (27 April, Kennedy Road Settlement, Durban)

[fsg_gallery id=”251″]3 000 people came to the event. Initial attempts by the police to ban the event (which included the brief arrest of Mazwi Nzimande) were seen off after an hour of negotiation in which the law was explained to the police. They may also have concluded the symbolic power of the police having to beat 3 000 shack dwellers into submission in the Kennedy settlement while Zuma was speaking about freedom in the stadium might have been somewhat embarrassing…

The event continued with police ringing the perimeter of the settlement and a police helicopter flying low over head.
