Macassar invaders stay put

Dozens of backyard dwellers who invaded a piece of land in Macassar Village have vowed not to move until their grievances are addressed.

There were violent clashes between authorities and residents on Tuesday as officers moved in to evict the dwellers.

At least four people were arrested following the violence.

“They have ended up breaking the structures down and taking people’s material. Most people tried barricade the N2 and the police started firing rubber bullets at us,” community leader Mzonke Poni explained.
