Cape Town: All families of Conifer Court in Sea Point face eviction

Press Alert from the Western Cape Anti-Eviction Campaign

All families of Conifer Court in Sea Point face eviction

We the residents of Conifer Court in Conifer Street hereby notify all press that Conifers pty (ltd) has sent us applications for evictions. We have elected a committee and with the support of the Western Cape Anti Eviction Campaign we will defend the application in Cape Town magistrate’s court on the 20 June 2007.

We reject the intentions of Conifers pty (ltd) to evict us from the community and these apartments we have made our homes.

  • our children attend the schools close by.
  • we all work in the community.
  • transport is convenient.
  • we want to participate in the development of our community.
  • we do not have alternative accommodation.

We view this attempted eviction as illegal and another form of forced removal namely gentrification.

  • where our rents has sky rocketed pass our income.
  • our buildings not being maintained.
  • refuse not being collected.
  • low income persons are removed from the community.
  • tenants are intimidated and move out at night.
  • tampering with electricity and water to intimidate.
  • multimillion dollar companies buying up the buildings.

Our rental was good for the past eleven years or more and now it is not good enough because they want to enrich themselves in preparation for the 2010 world cup.

We demand security of tenure, affordable rents and decent low cost housing in our community.

We have made Sea Point our home – our children were born here. We work here, we live here and we plan to stay here.

We are mobilizing the community to resist/oppose this new form of forced removals!.

We call on all tenants in Sea Point and other similar communities who are facing intimidation and evictions to contact our committee.
