Political Education Camp

The movement of Abahlali baseMjondolo SA will hold a Political Education Camp on the 11th March 2017 at the Hindu Surat Hall in Prince Edward Street. The camp will start at 18h00 and continue until sunrise.

The camp is platform where our members can be together and reflect about our movement, our struggle our society and our world. This is where we educate one another about Ubuhlalism, which is our political ideology. This is where we reflect on our lives and our histories.

We are also going to be watching some of the documentaries, such as Biryani and the Councillor and Dear Mandela, that were compiled in our twelve years of existence and struggle. After watching each documentary our members will get an opportunity to reflect on the road that we have travelled.

Our movement has a culture of political education where we learn from each other and remind ourselves about Ubuhlalism. We remind ourselves that we are in struggle because we are impoverished. We remind ourselves that we were purposely made to be poor and that we are purposely kept poor. We remind ourselves that struggle opens the road to justice and that we advance along that road by building the power, the democratic power, of the oppressed.

The camp will also give the opportunity to our members to raise their concerns in their branches.

As a movement we have gone through a lot in the first decade of our existence. For the past ten years we have been regarded as the as a threat to peace and stability in the country. Our peaceful means and attempts to meaningfully engage with the state were met with arrogance, death threats, torture, arrests and the exclusion and assassination of our comrades.

Our aim has always been to see a just and equal society, built on respect and human dignity. We remain committed to a society where justice becomes the order of the day. As we forge engagements with the state we will always reflect on the work that we have done and the road that we have travelled. We will continue to fight for and promote, protect and advance the interests of the impoverished and marginalised people of our country.

Our movement believes that leaders are made in struggle. An important part of our political work is to build tomorrow’s leaders today. This is why we believe that we must continuously train our people in order for them to become good leaders. Part of this political education camp will be to equip one another about how to deal with issues that we face in our branches.

Land. Housing. Dignity.

Occupy. Resist. Develop.
