Solidarity: Police repression of student protest at WITS

3 October 2007

Police reaction today to students protesting price increments and privatisation of residences at WITS University has been unjustifiably harsh. They opened fire on students with rubber bullets without warning and have arrested numerous protesters, who were taken to Hillbrow Police Station.

Protesters are now planning to gather at the WITS Business Campus in Parktown to continue the struggle.

The solidarity of the social movements and progressive sectors of civil society is urgently needed to halt this movement of the WITS administration, who under the neo-liberal policies of the ANC, are turning institutions of education and higher learning into profit making enterprises for the already wealthy.
