More than 500 Ntuzuma residents burned tyres and blocked roads in protest over what they claim is a lack of service delivery in the area.
The angry crowd from the Mancinza area and the township’s J section said they wanted proper houses from the municipality.
Capt Phindile Nxumalo of the KwaMashu Police Station said residents started protesting from about 2am.
“The main issue that these people have raised is that they have been promised low cost houses over and over again, but to date they have not been built and that is why they have decided to embark on this protest,” she said.
Nxumalo said the protest started from the Mancinza area and then protesters headed to the KwaMashu Sports Centre, where they waited to hand over a memorandum to the mayor.
Councillor for the area, Skhumbuzo Ndaba, said he was not informed about the protest and only heard about it today. ” No-one came to me about this issue, so I cannot comment until I see the memorandum,” he said. – Daily News Reporter
