A service delivery protest in Khayelitsha on Tuesday has put one person in hospital, according to the organisers, Abahlali baseMjondolo.

“More than 15 people were shot at with rubber bullets by reactional SAPS and metro police members at yesterday’s protest at Khayelitsha and one of them is in critical condition at Groote Schuur Hospital,” said the anti-poverty organisation Abahlali baseMjondolo in a statement.

“Police had to fire rubber bullets at community members who were protesting in order to control the situation,” said Constable Mthokozisi Gama.

Gama said that no injuries were reported.

The protest lasted four hours. Demonstrators dispersed at 9pm. Gama said protesters burned tyres, pelted police with stones and set a Golden Arrow bus ablaze.

A case of malicious damage of property had been opened. No arrests had been made. – Sapa
