When the South African government promises to 'eradicate the slums' and begins to evict shack dwellers far outside the city, three friends who live in Durban's vast shantytowns refuse to be moved. Dear Mandela follows their journey from their shacks to the highest court in the land as they invoke Nelson Mandela's example and become leaders in a growing social movement. By turns inspiring, devastating and funny, the film offers a new perspective on the role that young people can play in political change and is a fascinating portrait of South Africa coming of age.

About Abahlali baseMjondolo:
Abahlali baseMjondolo, also known as AbM or the red shirts, is a shack-dwellers' movement in South Africa. It is well known for campaigning against evictions and for public housing. The movement grew out of a road blockade organized from the Kennedy Road shack settlement in the city of Durban in early 2005 and is now the largest shack dweller's organization in South Africa. AbM campaigns to improve the living conditions of poor people and to democratize society from below. The movement refuses party politics and boycotts elections. Its key demand is that the social value of urban land should take priority over its commercial value and it campaigns for the public expropriation of large privately owned landholdings. According to The Times, the movement "has shaken the political landscape of South Africa." However the movement has faced sustained, and at times violent repression and is currently undergoing the most brutal wave of evictions and murders at the hands of police since its founding. Three members of AbM have been either murdered in shadowy circumstances or killed by police since June. Nqobile Nzuza, a 17-year-old girl, was shot in the back and killed by a police officer during a protest in the Cato Crest area of Durban on the last day of September. No investigation was opened in the aftermath of any of these cases. Many more members have been injured in shootings and arrested during housing protests over the past few months.
Each screening of the tour will be followed by a Q&A and debate with two founding members of the Abahlali movement, S'bu Zikode and Bandile Mdlalose. Both leaders have been directly affected by the recent wave of state repression. As documented in the film, S’bu’s family home at the Kennedy Road Informal Settlement was destroyed by ANC party loyalists in September 2009 and they were forced into hiding after repeated public death threats against him. They are currently back in hiding after more death threats, some coming from ANC leaders in Durban. Bandile has also been forced to move her family away from where they had been staying after similar threats. In addition, she was targeted for arrest at a housing protest and held in prison for one week in early October.
The screening tour brings together community members and activists from Rio and South Africa to discuss forced evictions in Rio, Durban, and around the world, connecting those at risk of forced eviction around the globe, and strengthen social movements working toward the right to housing and dignity for all.

Sobre Abahlali baseMjondolo:
Abahlali baseMjondolo, também conhecido como AbM ou ‘red shirts’, é um movimento de moradores de assentamentos informais da África do Sul. Ele é conhecido por fazer campanha contra os desalojamentos e a favor de moradia social. O movimento cresceu a partir do bloqueio da via Kennedy Road, organizado pelo assentamento de mesmo nome na cidade de Durban no início de 2005, e é hoje a maior organização de moradores de assentamentos informais da África do Sul. AbM faz campanhas para melhorar as condições de vida da população pobre e para democratizar a sociedade a partir de baixo. O movimento é contra políticas partidárias e boicota eleições. Sua reivindicação fundamental é que o valor social da terra urbana deve ter prioridade sobre o valor comercial, pressionando a expropriação das grandes propriedades privadas. Segundo o jornal The Times, o movimento "abalou o cenário político da África do Sul". No entanto, o movimento tem enfrentado constante e, muitas vezes, violenta repressão, e está passando nesse momento pela fase mais brutal de despejos e assassinatos nas mãos da polícia desde a sua fundação.
Três membros da AbM foram assassinados em circunstâncias obscuras ou foram mortos pela polícia desde junho. Nqobile Nzuza, uma menina de 17 anos de idade, foi baleada nas costas por um policial durante um protesto na região de Cato Crest, em Durban, e morreu no último dia de setembro. Nenhum inquérito foi aberto como consequência de qualquer um desses casos. Muitos outros membros foram feridos em tiroteios e presos durante os protestos por moradia ao longo dos últimos meses.
Toda exibição do filme na turnê será seguida de debate com dois membros fundadores do movimento Abahlali, S’bu Zikode e Bandile Mdlalose.
Ambos os líderes têm sido diretamente afetados pela recente onda de repressão do Estado. Conforme documentado no filme, a casa da família de S'bu, que fica no Assentamento Informal de Kennedy Road, foi destruída por agentes do partido ANC em setembro de 2009 e eles foram forçados a se esconder depois de repetidas ameaças púbilcas de morte. Atualmente eles estão de volta a clandestinidade devido `a novas ameaças de morte, algumas vindo de líderes do ANC, em Durban. Bandile também foi forçada a mudar com a sua família para longe de onde estavam hospedados após ameaças semelhantes. Além disso, ela foi marcada para ser presa em um protesto por moradia e mantida na cadeia por uma semana no início de outubro.
A turnê de exibição do filme reúne membros das comunidades e ativistas do Rio e da África do Sul para discutir os despejos forçados no Rio de Janeiro, Durban, e ao redor do mundo, colocando em contato as pessoas que vivem sob o risco de serem despejadas forçadamente no mundo inteiro, e fortalecendo os movimentos sociais que trabalham pelo o direito à moradia e dignidade para todos.
