ICRC: Women’s Picket at Jeppe Police Station on Monday 10 November

Inner City Resource Centre (ICRC) – Media Release

[7 November 2008]

INNER CITY PICKET AT JEPPE POLICE STATION MOVED TO MONDAY 10 NOVEMBER AT 10AM

Due to frantic work instituting legal proceedings and obtaining an urgent order from the Johannesburg High Court to allow the residents of the building back into their home, the women only picket planned for yesterday (see below) could not go ahead. It will now be held on Monday 10 November 2008, at 10am at Jeppe Police Station. We apologize for any inconvenience.

We are asking all women living in the Inner City to attend the picket, which will be against corrupt police practice in the Inner City and police involvement in violent illegal evictions like Wednesday’s, which cause immense suffering to themselves and their children. Police are meant to be protectors of the people, not persecutors of the poor for money under the table…

MAKE YOUR VOICES HEARD!

WOMEN OF THE INNER CITY PICKET AT JEPPE POLICE STATION

THURSDAY 6 NOVEMBER AT 10AM

NO TO ILLEGAL EVICTIONS AND CORRUPT POLICE!

Following the violent illegal eviction carried out on Davies/ Rocky St in Doornfontein on Wednesday morning, the Inner City Resource Centre will be holding a picket for WOMEN ONLY at the Jeppe Police Station at 10am on Thursday 6 November. Women and children suffer the most during evictions and we say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! We will not tolerate corrupt police who assist private owners in illegally evicting people, even when the Sheriff himself has told them to stop and is behind the people! We will not tolerate our children being shot with rubber bullets and teargassed! We will resist xenophobia and will not attack fellow Africans working and living in the inner city – they are not the problem! We oppose the source of illegal evictions and corrupt police, not those who earning a living as security guards.

All women are welcome, come and make your voices heard!
