Protea South Transit Camp Demolished

The much resisted and never occupied Protea South transit camp was finally demolished in December 2009, four years after it was first built.

The land was rented from a private land owner and the transit camp was intended for the relocation (in phases) of the Protea South shack settlement. A local ANC leader got the security contract for the camp. The Landless People s Movement, with direct action, protest and legal support, resisted the relocation on grounds of there being no hard information on the extent of the dolomite (the reason given for the need to relocate) and their refusal to be dumped outside of the city. Relocation was initially planned to Lehae, quite far to the south, and later to Doornkop, to the northwest. In the case of Lehae, the houses were allocated to relocates from other settlements. In the case of Doornkop, this development is still underway.
