ANCYL blamed for violent protest in CT

The “shack dwellers’ movement” Abahlali baseMjondolo has distanced itself from Thursday’s violent protest in Cape Town.

Police confirmed that three vehicles, including one reportedly transporting stationary for matric exams, were set alight near Mew Way in Khayelitsha.

AbM Chairperson Mzonke Poni has blamed the ANC Youth League for inciting violence.

“The leaders of the community that are in the forefront of these protests and also publically in the meetings they have said themselves that they are not linked to Abahlali baseMjondolo. Their struggle is linked to the ANC Youth League,” he said.

However, the youth league’s spokesperson Andile Lili dismissed the claims saying, “We didn’t start anything yet.”
