25 homes demolished in Cato Crest

Around 25 homes have been demolished in the Cato Crest informal settlement.

Ethekwini municipality bulldozers went into the area earlier today, and knocked down the homes, leaving more than 70 residents without shelter.

On Monday last week eleven shacks were bulldozed.

Shackdwellers’ movement, Abahlali baseMjondolo, has condemned the action by the city.

Bandile Mdlalose says they have been carried out despite an interdict preventing further demolitions.

The Ethekwini city manager Sibu Sithole is due in court tomorrow to explain why they have continued despite being interdicted.

Mdlalose says they are disappointed with the way the city has handled the issue.

“The leaders have to take accountability for their action, because the fact that there’s a court order there’s a law supporting the people.

“If we take the law into our hands we are sent to jail. So it should also apply to them if they don’t respect the law,” he said.

City officials have reportedly denied being in contempt of court.
