Two ANC councillors facing charges of murder are due to appear in the Durban high court on Monday.

Abahlali baseMjondolo said in a statement on Friday that the two men were alleged izinkabi (hitmen).

“We have witnessed a t least 40 people being killed in the hostels in Durban‚ particular in Umlazi and KwaMashu townships”‚ the movement said. “The provincial government has failed to act decisively to protect lives.”

Abahlali baseMjondolo claimed that when Ngcobo and Lutshelu appeared in the high court on January 25 this year‚ they were escorted by people wearing ANC T-shirts.

The movement claimed that its members and journalists were “openly threatened by Nqola‚ his brother and ANC members. We have often received public death threats from ANC members while attending court hearings.”

It called on progressive forces “to stand against the politic of blood and to defend democratic values and practices” and asked journalists to report these alleged threats.
