Abahlali baseMjondolo in Court Against Evictions This Week
Our movement defends against all attempts to destroy the homes of the poor and to drive us off our land, whether in the occupations, on the streets, or in the courts.
Today the Mthatha High Court will hear the matter between Abahlali baseMjondolo and the Umzimvubu Municipality. Comrades in Mount Ayliff are being evicted by the Umzimvubu Municipality under the Alfred Nzo District. The community in Mount Ayliff has faced brutal attacks from the ANC-led municipality and the police. Many of the people in the occupation, which has faced unlawful arrests, teargas, and rubber bullets, are elderly.
Yesterday the Johannesburg High Court heard the matter between Abahlali baseMjondolo in Mountain View in Soweto and the Johannesburg municipality. A consent order was reached between our lawyers and the municipality’s lawyers, stating that because the municipality had served the wrong location, they cannot continue with the evictions. The municipality was instructed to serve the correct people and not our members, with the result that the municipality is ordered to cease its evictions.
Evictions at gunpoint continue in Durban, where people are routinely brutally beaten by the Anti-Land Invasion Unit and private security. Many people have suffered as a result. One person has been hospitalised due to the severe injuries he sustained from being beaten by private security while people were being unlawfully evicted from their homes next to Howard College.
