Grahamstown Agrarian Studies Research Group Seminar with David Ntseng and Nomsa Mkhize

The third seminar in the Department of Sociology’s Agrarian Studies Research
Group (Land Conflict in South Africa) Seminar Series in May is to take place
in the Department of Sociology between 3:15 and 4:30 p.m. on Thursday May
the 19th.

The presenters are Bantoe David Ntseng (Church Land Programme, KwaZulu-Natal) and Nomsa Mkhize (Abahlali baseMjondolo, KwaZulu-Natal).

Their topic is:

Current resistance to urban and rural evictions in KwaZulu-Natal.

The Church Land Programme CLP) was initiated in 1996 as a joint project between
the Association for Rural Advancement (Afra) and the Pietermaritzburg Agency
for Christian Social Awareness (Pacsa), in response to the land reform
process taking place in South Africa. It was established as an independent
organisation in 1997 and initially focused on church owned land while also
challenging the Church to engage in the national land question and work for
a just and sustainable agrarian transformation.

CLP works to affirm, learn from and journey with those who are
systematically excluded and impoverished in their struggles related to land
and justice. CLP supports people’s struggles for freedom and to regain their
collective power.

Abahlali baseMjondolo is poor people’s movement that struggles for land and housing, and to democratise society from the ground up. It began in Durban in 2005. The movement refuses electoral politics and has organised two successful land occupations in the Pinetown area in recent months.
