Residents of the Quarry Road informal settlement yesterday sifted through
the burned-out remains of their shacks, after a fire ripped through the
settlement in the early hours.

Many desperately tried to salvage bits and pieces from the ashes to rebuild
their homes once the fire had been extinguished.

Reservoir Hills/Clare Estate councillor Jayraj Bachu said blankets and food
had already been supplied to the residents by various organisations in the
area. He said the Quarry Road shack dwellers were already part of the slum
clearance programme, and suggested the eThekwini municipality make it its
priority to rehouse them.

According to Metro Fire And Emergency Services, an overturned candle is
believed to have started the fire.
