The People Of Blinkbonnie Can Finally Call eNkanini Home

Kids are running around playing, it’s the school holidays. Elderly women are sitting outside in the sun; they say inside their houses it’s chilly. Enkanini, which translates to ‘place of strong-willed’ in Blinkbonnie Road, Durban, has become their only home.

“We have settled here, this is now our homes and a community,” says a 58-year-old Noncedile Diko.

After months of restlessness and continuous court disputes over land with the municipality, the people of Blinkbonnie Road, a strip of land in Bonela have finally found ‘peace’. Land Occupations are Urban Land Reform from Below but Sale of Land is Criminal

Abahlali are pleased to announce that there has been remarkable progress in the eNkanini settlement in Cato Manor over the past two weeks. The MEC for Human Settlement and Public Works in KwaZulu-Natal Mr. Ravi Pillay has intervened in the brutal evictions and violation of a court interdict by eThekwini Land Invasion Unit. After several discussions with the Provincial government Abahlali has reached an agreement with the Province that violence cannot build our city, our province and our country. What has in fact been lacking is proper leadership on the side of the eThekwini Municipality. They believe in violence and disregard of the rule of law. As a result many activists have been injured, tortured, arrested and even killed despite the court interdict protecting 241 families that our movement has secured from the Durban High Court. Death Threats at the eNkanini Land Occupation in Cato Manor

We continue to face serious intimidation and repression in our land occupations in Durban. Yesterday men driving Metro police vehicles, but not wearing police uniforms, arrived at the eNkanini Land Occupation in Cato Manor. They issued clear death threats.

The men were targeting our chairperson in the branch. They called his name and when he came out they told him that he will not last. They said that he needs to be killed in order to stop the occupation.   Continue reading →

Justice for Nqobile Nzuza

Nqobile Nzuza was murdered by a police officer on a road blockade in Cato Crest on 30 September 2013. She was seventeen years old and doing her matric. She joined the road blockade in protest against the brutal attacks on the Marikana Land Occupation in Cato Manor by the eThekwini Municipality.

When impoverished people struggle for land and housing we are taken as criminals, as people who are beneath the law. We are treated as people who do not count, as people whose homes and property can be destroyed, and as people who can be subject to slander, assault, torture and murder with impunity.  Continue reading →
