The Trial of the Politicians

At 2:00 p.m. today the Unemployed People’s Movement will hold ‘The Trial of the Politicians’ at the occupied people’s space in Ward 88, Umlazi.

The Umlazi Occupation is ongoing and the ruling party has made a number of significant concessions with regard to councillor and the ward committee. Negotiations have also been opened on various issues relating to housing and other urgent matters.

We are very aware that these concessions have been forced by sustained and committed struggle from below and from the left in the face of repression and intimidation. It is now necessary to take the struggle to the next level. Defeating the councillor and the ward committee was a good start. Forcing the most senior politicians in the city to take us seriously was a good start. We have started to taste victory. We have built our confidence and our struggle skills. Strong connections have been between comrades in Umlazi and in other parts of the city like Wentworth and Siyanda. Now we need to move up to the next level. We need to remain organised, to strengthen our connections with other struggling communities and to develop our analysis of the system that we are confronting as we move forward to the next level of struggle. We need clarity about the causes of the problems that we face and about how we can build the power of the poor to make real changes from below. This will require constant discussions amongst ourselves as we move forward. Today we will hold ‘The Trial of the to Politicians ‘to give us such an opportunity for collective discussion and reflection.

The politicians say that they are working for the people and that we must trust them. But what we all see is that, starting at the very top and continuing to the very bottom, they are using the state to enrich themselves and their families and not as a tool to transform society. We see that millions of people are without work, without land, without housing and without access to decent education. We see that things are getting worse and not better. We see that there is a massive rebellion of the poor across the country and that where every people organise they face repression by the police and party members. This is also getting worse and not better. When we look at the politicians we see a predatory elite eating the wealth of society and repressing the people but always doing all this in the name of the people.

This will be a people’s court. We will closely examine the evidence against the politicians on the basis of our own experiences of this society and then the people will be asked to pass judgment on the politicians. The politicians are always passing judgment on the people and tomorrow the tables will be turned. There will be no holy cows. It will be an open and honest discussion.

Ward 88 BEC Refuses to Go to the People

Combined AbM & UPM Press Statement

Ward 88 BEC Refuses to Go to the People

For the past months the organised poor in Ward 88 in Durban have been fighting for their rights, and the resignation of Nomzamo Mkhize who is the current ANC Ward Councillor.

Their struggle has led to activists being arrested, shot at with real bullets by the police and threats and an assault at the hands of the councillor. Despite all these violations of their right to participate in decision making that directly affects them the activists in Ward 88 did not give up and have shown that they are prepared to continue their fight for justice and their human dignity to be installed.

Mercury: It’s about the Poor, not Politicians

It’s about the Poor, not Politicians

by Imraan Buccus

As courageous journalism brings more and more information into the public domain about how some under our last municipal regime behaved like “Chicago gangsters”, it’s becoming increasingly clear just how bad things were. The Manase report seems to show the extent to which our municipal coffers were plundered, but it’s the investigations into the power that people like the late John Mchunu wielded over the municipality that explains how it actually happened.

One symptom of what went so wrong in Durban has been the political assassinations that have so shamed the city. Who would have thought that what the premier bravely referred to as the confluence of politics, business, and crime would have led us to this point in the democratic era? If we stay on the current path we’ll end up more like Colombia than the society envisaged in our constitution.

ANC councillor faces disciplinary hearing

Hlengiwe Nhlabathi

AN ANC councillor in KwaZulu-Natal, who pleaded guilty to assaulting a critic, is due to be dragged before the party’s disciplinary hearing for ill-conduct.

Sowetan has learnt that the ANC’s provincial leadership has given the Umlazi branch permission to take disciplinary action against Ward 88 councillor Nomzamo Mkhize.

The ANC’s Umlazi branch executive committee sat yesterday to clear the party’s name against a rising perception that it had become a party that “undermined and frustrated” residents.

A source said there had been many complaints against Mkhize.

The final straw was the assault on Thabile Ngcobo, who was walking from a community meeting last Monday after residents had reiterated their call that Mkhize be removed for service delivery related failures.

Mkhize had initially denied any involvement in the assault, claiming she was being wrongly accused.

According to Ngcobo, Mkhize accosted her and questioned her about her attending the “stupid” meeting before she was slapped and kicked and had her T-shirt torn with a knife.

A criminal case of assault was opened and Mkhize was arrested the following day. But the matter was settled out of court.

In a meeting mediated by a social worker, Mkhize promised to pay R1500 within seven days as compensation for her wrongdoing.

Umlazi’s ANC branch secretary Sakhile Ngcobo would not to comment on the disciplinary proceedings, but said Mkhize’s assault on Ngcobo had “embarrassed” the party.

The ANC has been attempting to mend rifts between between Mkhize and Zakheleni residents.

A meeting held recently with lobby group Abahlali BaseMjondolo was derailed when Mkhize walked out, with Abahlali claiming that they had felt undermined by the party’s members.

Ngcobo said the party had managed to secure the presence of the eThekwini municipality chairman of the human settlements committee, Nigel Gumede, for a meeting to be held today.
