Abahlali held a successful elective congress over the weekend

Over the years our movement has grown rapidly despite the continuous repression from the state. The vision of the movement has always been to protect, promote and advance the interests of the impoverished and marginalised. We continue to fight for a just and equal society where dignity of all human kind is recognised. We have not deviated from our vision. We continue to build the power of the impoverished from below.

This weekend we held an elective congress. A total of 23 branches, all in good standing, participated in the congress. Five provinces were part of the conference.
On Saturday 08th December the policy conference was held where two representatives from each branches were part of the policy formulation and the amendment of the constitution. On Sunday, the following day the elections, which were highly contested, were held for the National Council of Abahlali baseMjondolo.

Independent observers were tasked to act as our IEC.

The newly elected National Council takes on its responsibilities after a period of sustained repression, including multiple assassinations, and attempts by the ANC to infiltrate the movement. They have a clear and democratic mandate and the trust and support of tens of thousands of our members in settlements and occupations across the country.

The newly elected leadership of the movement is as follows:

• Sibusiso Zikode – President
• Mqapheli Bonono – Deputy President
• Thapelo Mohapi – General Secretary
• Nomsa Sizani – Deputy Secretary
• Zanele Mtshali – National Chairperson
• Thuso Mohapi – Treasurer
• Mlungisi Mokoena – Co-ordinator
• Bathabile Makhoba – Chief whip

The struggle continues.
