Abahlali to launch a branch in Cato Manor

Abahlali baseMjondolo will be launching a branch in Cato Manor in Umkhumbane today. We have had many members in the area for some time and they are now ready to constitute and elect a council and officially become part of the organised structures of our movement.

The comrades in Umkhumbane have faced serious repression and regular attacks in the struggle for land and dignity. There are comrades who have lost their eyes and ears and some are not walking properly. Mlungisi Mokoena, an 18 year old pupil, was shot in both legs by the Anti-Land Invasion Unit for refusing to let them demolish his home. Women have been severely beaten by these armed men.  Continue reading

Brutal Attack in Cato Manor – Comrades are Currently Being Assaulted in Police Custody

This morning the Anti-Land Invasion Unit launched another brutal and illegal attack on the new land occupation in Cato Manor. Once again they destroyed and burnt people’s homes and possessions and engaged in serious assault.

Once again people resisted. Four comrades were arrested and taken to the Cato Manor police station where they are currently being subject to serious assault. Two other comrades have also been arrested and are currently in a police van.   Continue reading

Durban – Cato Manor shack dwellers are refusing to leave the area, saying they would rather let the government dig their graves where they are staying. They have vowed to fight until the bitter end.

Shack dwellers in Cato Manor, Durban, say evictions and demolitions carried out by the eThekwini Municipality from Saturday to Monday left many homeless and injured. They accuse the municipal land invasion unit of brutality, theft and acting illegally.   Continue reading

Repression in Durban

The Movement of Abahlali baseMjondolo continues to face serious and unlawful repression by the ANC led municipality in Durban. Right now the community in Cato Manor right now are trying to collect all the pieces and rebuild what is left of their lives are after repeated violent attacks by the Anti-Land Invasion Unit. During these attacks people have been seriously assaulted, beaten with the butts of guns and shot, often multiple times, with rubber bullets.
