Highway Mail: Motala Mess Needs Fixing

After all these years Ricky Govender continues to, with the support of Derick Dimba, treat Motala Heights as his own personal fiefdom.

Motala Mess Needs Fixing

Highway Mail, 8 October 2010

Municipal ground in Motala Heights being used as a dump is causing headaches for residents yet the local counillor it seems, is not fazed about the issue.

For several weeks locals have noticed an ever increasing pile of rubble, wooden pallets and broken items on the corner plot of ground between Naidoo and Motala Roads. Resident, Granis Govender, said the dumping was an “eyesore to the community” and people needed to heed the sign saying “No Dumping”. A visit to the site shows the sign clearly.

Ward Councillor for the area, Derrick Dimba, said at first he did not know what the residents were complaining about and said he would investigate. Three days later he said: “I have sent a request to DSW to investigate. What more do you want from me? I have done my work. Don’t call me about this again.”

Passing residents and pedestrians said several people had been seen coming in and out of the grounds but didn’t know where they came from.

A nearby resident said he was worried about what the mess would bring into the neighbourhood as rates, cockroaches and other small vermin may spill over into homes.

A spokesperson for the eThekwini Municipality’s Law Enforcement department, Zanela Ncube, said she was investigating the matter.
