FREE MQAPHELI BONONO AND SINIKO MIYA!!!

Socialist Forum of Ghana has just learnt with deep alarm, of the arrest of Comrades Mqapheli Bonono and Siniko Miya, both members of Abahlali baseMjondolo (Shack dwellers Movement) by the South African Police. Our information suggests that the two activists were arrested on a false and indeed incredible charge of ‘conspiracy to commit murder’. Continue reading

eKhenana: A background provided in the context of the arrest of Mqapheli Bonono

The arrest of our Deputy President, Mqapheli (George) Bonono, on trumped up charges is related to the longstanding attempts by the ANC to crush the eKhenena Occupation in Cato Manor, an occupation that is now a working commune. These attempts have been formally organised through the armed force of the eThekwini Municipality, and informally organised through local political actors connected to the networks of patronage and accumulation around ANC politics at the ward level, some of them with criminal connections. Statement of solidarity from Kambale Musavuli, a comrade from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

A statement of solidarity from Kambale Musavuli, a comrade of ours from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

A brother and friend in South Africa has been arrested on false charges. His name is Comrade Bonono. He is a very humble man, always there for not just South Africans but all humanity. I remember evening discussions with him in a few countries around the world we connected. He shared with me stories on how his movement, Abahlali baseMjondolo, protected Congolese families during the xenophobic attacks in SA. Very often, they would sleep outside the house of Congolese families to protect them… and this would go on for days and sometimes weeks. Continue reading

Solidarity from our comrades in the United States

Statement of Solidarity with Abahlali baseMjondolo: Freedom for Mqapheli Bonono & Siniko Miya

Earlier this week in South Africa, Mqapheli Bonono and Siniko Miya, members of Abahlali baseMjondolo (AbM) or the Shackdwellers Movement, were arrested on false charges of “conspiracy to commit murder.” Bonono is the movement’s Deputy President and an important political figure in South Africa.

Abahlali baseMjondolo is the most significant poor people’s movement to have emerged in post-apartheid South Africa. Over 15 years of struggle, Abahlali baseMjondolo has faced unrelenting repression, attacks, and threats against the leadership and members of the movement – including campaigns of well-organized slander and hundreds of wrongful arrests. As many as ten of its members have been assassinated in the past five years among numerous other acts of violence, some of it fatal, by the police and the South African state.  Continue reading

Our Deputy President Mqapheli Bonono and Siniko Miya are in Detention – a call for solidarity

On Tuesday late morning three police officers arrived at the Durban offices of our movement. They arrived with Siniko Miya, a member of our movement and a resident of the eKhenana occupation, in their custody. They then arrested our Deputy President Mqapheli Bonono (who is often known as George). They said that they were arresting him on a charge of ‘conspiracy to commit murder’ following witness statements made about the content of a meeting chaired by Bonono.  Continue reading

Per Anger Prize Speech

S’bu Zikode

The price for land, for decent housing and the right to the city is paid in blood. Brutal and unlawful evictions continue to terrorize our communities.

No human being should live in substandard housing conditions, without access to basic services such as water and sanitation, where there is no road access, where there is no electricity and where there is no refuse collection.

I have dedicated my life to the fight for equal rights for all South Africans. And I am deeply honoured and humbled to stand here today, and receive the Per Anger Prize – a prize named after a man who bravely resisted fascism, and saved many lives. Continue reading

Fire renders 49 families homeless

A fire that broke out in the early hours of the morning today in Cato Crest (Marikana) has taken the life of a 38-year-old woman, Nomasamson Dlamini, and injured a 16-year-old, Cebo Mpiliso, who is in a critical condition in hospital. More than 45 households were affected by this fire. Nomasamson Dlamini was the mother of two children, who are at her home in Lesotho.
Winter is upon us and many people will be trying to find ways to keep themselves warm. For those living in shack settlements this is very difficult as we have to watch our homes not to be burnt by fires. The situation in Cato Crest at the moment is difficult as people have lost everything including the food for the month. Their homes have become ashes, they do not have materials to rebuild their homes at the moment. Continue reading
