Solidarity Screening -17 Apri1 2011- Cape Town
In commemoration of the Eldorado dos Carajás massacre and struggling farmers worldwide.
This coming Sunday, the 17th of April, from 12 pm- 3pm we will be holding a short film screening as part of the International Day of Farmers remembering the massacre of landless peasants at Eldorado dos Carajás and the worldwide struggle of farm-workers.
To recognise and respect their struggle, the event will serve as not only a film screening but a spring board for further action and discussion.
There will be actions throughout the country at the end of the month, commemorating what some call Freedom Day. One of these actions will be a march from Gugulethu to Khayelitsha organised by Pastor Xola Skosana and the community on the 23rd of April. Like the poor of Brazil, these communities also suffer from landlessness and state repression.
They will be marching to highlight the disasterous problem of transport for marginalised communities. They are mobilising as part of the election boycott campaign conducted by Abahlali baseMjondolo, the Anti Eviction Campaign, and others. They are saying: genoeg is genoeg!

The screening is taking place so we can come together to address these issues
* To organise support for the march on the 23rd, and co-ordinate any possible solidarity actions taking place elsewhere. Pastor Xola will be with us to explain the details of the march and facilitate co-operation with the communities involved
* To co-ordinate stronger unity among us in the future. Proposals in this regard include
o Forming direct-action network preventing demolitions and evictions of the poor.
o Forming cultural networks during demonstrations, protests, fundraising, education etc
o Forming institutions that allow students & academics to use the resources at their institutions to assist in the struggle

Lastly, to formulate a positive strategy for the election boycott: a campaign of direct-democracy i.e. reffurenda, ballot propositions, plebiscites. No vote for politicians: Yes vote for vital issues!
o We could vote to change the constitution to legalize the occupation of vacant property
o Spend our taxes on a community-controlled, worker-managed public works programme
These are just some possibilities; there are many more.
