Memorial service for Comrade S’fiso Ngcobo

Today Abahlali baseMjondolo Movement will hold a memorial service for our fallen Comrade, and chairperson of eKukhanyeni branch, S’fiso Ngcobo. This is to honour our Comrade and to give him the respect and dignity that he was denied while he was still living.

The memorial service will be held at the eKukhanyeni branch where Comrade Ngcobo was assassinated outside his house by three unknown men on Tuesday 22nd May at 19:30pm. The service will begin at 3pm today, Thursday, 31st May 2018 Continue reading

Statement on the Assassination of S’fiso Ngcobo

On Saturday our branch in eKukhanyeni, in Marianhill, held a very successful and well attended assembly. On Tuesday night, at around 7:30 pm, our chairperson in the branch, S’fisio Ngcobo, stepped out of his home to buy a cooldrink from a shop in a container next to his home. He had received death threats and was aware that it was not safe to be out at night. But the container was just a few meters from his home. He was shot, multiple times, by a group of unknown men. The police were called. They took more than three hours to arrive even though the local police station is nearby. Despite the danger large numbers of comrades immediately gathered at Ngcobo’s home.  Continue reading

For Phumzile Mkhize – whose land rights activist husband S’fiso Ngcobo was gunned down just metres from his home on Tuesday night – the prospect of life without him is too much to bear.

Another Abahlali activist shot dead

Abahlali baseMjondolo has urged President Cyril Ramaphosa to set up an independent committee to investigate the killing of their leaders, after chairperson S’fiso Ngcobo was killed on Tuesday night.

Last week President Cyril Ramaphosa deployed a ministerial team to investigate political killings in KwaZulu-Natal. This came after former ANC ward councillor Musawenkosi Mchunu was shot dead in Pietermaritzburg. According to Ramaphosa 14 politicians have been killed in the Moses Mabhida Region since the beginning of 2016. A member of the Inkatha Freedom Party, Sibuyiselo Dlamini, was shot the same night in Ulundi. Continue reading

Shack dweller movement’s KZN leader ‘assassinated’

Abahlali baseMjondolo, the shack dwellers movement that began in Durban, is reeling from the apparent assassination of one of its leaders in the city on Tuesday night.

S’fiso Ngcobo, the movement’s chairperson in eKukhayeni, was murdered by three unknown gunmen.

Abahlali spokesperson Sbu Zikode told News24 that the organisation was “deeply hurt, because this was not just a leader, he was a father to his kids, an uncle and a breadwinner.  Continue reading
