ANC KWAZULU-NATAL VICTORY STATEMENT
04 JUNE 1999

The province of KwaZulu-Natal will never be the same again. The people have decided their destiny; through their vote, they have chosen a better life for all by voting ANC as a strong party in KwaZulu-Natal. We are happy that we did not only add more urban votes but also greatly improved our standing in regional councils.

The ANC humbly accepts the confidence shown to it by the people of the province. It is a great honour and yet is at the same time a great responsibility and challenge. The ANC promises to, in partnership with all our people, black and white, meet these grave challenges. The ANC will together with our people address the concerns of the poorest of the poor living in squatter camps like Kennedy Road, Lusaka and Mbambayi and the poorest of the poor in our rural who still yearn for clean running water, a community access road, a better health car, jobs and security.

At the same time we will look at the genuine concerns of those who may have benefited in the past apartheid order. There is room for everybody. There is hope for everybody.

We address a special word to the white, Indian and Coloured communities. We have a common desti!!ny. We must all in practice create a non-racial and non-sexist society. We must break away fro our apartheid-created cocoons and reach out to each other as the people of KwaZulu-Natal. We will seek co-operation with traditional leaders so that we are together in making a better life for all.

The youth, women, professionals, the disabled, the sick will all have a vital role to play in our endeavour for a better life for all. This will be a government of the people, for the people and by the people.

We will seek to co-operate with all political forces and non-government bodies who have a genuine interest in the prosperity of the people of KwaZulu-Natal.

The ANC wishes to sincerely thank all our people who made it possible for the elections to run smoothly and be a resounding success. At the top of this list are millions of our people in urban and rural areas, black and white, who patiently waited a long queues to exercise their hard-won freedom to vote for the representatives of their choice. The people have spoken.

We thank the leadership and staff of the IEC in the province who did a sterling job in preparing and running the actual elections. We salute our law enforcement agencies who together with all our people ensured that we had peaceful elections. We thank all political parties who behaved in an exceptionally responsible manner to ensure the integrity of the elections. We thank members of the media, both national and international, who accurately informed our people about the elections campaign, the elections themselves and the results of those elections. We thank members of the diplomatic corps and national and international observers whose presence added respectability to the elections.

The ANC leadership pays special tribute to the ANC unsung heroes and heroines who are the core of our cadreship at street, local, sub-regional and regional levels who in a creative way organised and mobilised millions of our people to register and vote for the ANC and a better life for all.

The ANC will be true to all our people. The ANC in government will be accountable to all our people, black and white, and irrespective of how people voted. Those people's representatives at local and provincial governments who fail our people and forget that their primary task is to serve all our people will be removed from position of authority irrespective of positions they hold in the ANC and government.

We shall together with our people address the problem of the economy, job creation, crime and corruption and the HIV/AIDS scourge. The ANC in government shall address all these problems in partnership wth all our people.

We promisent. We promise an efficient and government. We promise a government of the people. We promise a vernment in partnership with all our people. We promise loyalty.
