Blikkiesdorp residents long for dignity

Giovanna Gerbi | 23 Hours Ago

Some residents of the temporary relocation area Blikkiesdorp in Cape Town on Tuesday said their human rights are in tatters because their living conditions are appalling.

Eyewitness News visited the tin shanty town outside Delft while the country commemorated Human Rights Day on Monday.

The first residents moved to the Symphony Way Temporary Relocation Area – later dubbed ’Blikkiesdorp’ – in 2008. It was supposed to a short-term housing solution.

With music blaring out of a corrugated iron structure, resident Gabieba du Preez complained there is absolutely no privacy for her and her two young daughters.

She battles to wash herself and her toddlers as she shares an outside tap with three neighbours.

Du Preez is also worried about criminal elements in the area and added that she watches her girls like a hawk.

“When your child is outside, they are running here and there. And when you look again, they are gone. Anything can happen,” she said.

Other residents said they feel they merely exist instead of living dignified lives.

The “shack dwellers’ movement” Abahlali baseMjondolo has distanced itself from Thursday’s violent protest in Cape Town.

Police confirmed that three vehicles, including one reportedly transporting stationary for matric exams, were set alight near Mew Way in Khayelitsha.

AbM Chairperson Mzonke Poni has blamed the ANC Youth League for inciting violence.

“The leaders of the community that are in the forefront of these protests and also publically in the meetings they have said themselves that they are not linked to Abahlali baseMjondolo. Their struggle is linked to the ANC Youth League,” he said.

However, the youth league’s spokesperson Andile Lili dismissed the claims saying, “We didn’t start anything yet.”

Western Cape Local Government MEC Anton Bredell on Tuesday said he believed a third force was fuelling service delivery protests in the Cape Town area.

Bredell added that mischievous elements were trying to discredit the Democratic Alliance-led provincial government ahead of next year’s municipal elections.

Recently, there has been a large amount of violent protest action in Khayelitsha and Nyanga.

Bredell said as the elections drsw closer, competition amongst councillors is heating up.

“We are in the silly season; it is eight months before elections, so obviously there are a lot of things going on in communities. Councillors are trying to reposition themselves and there are new people who want to get an innings,” he added.

He added that more sinister elements were also at play.

“There are definitely forces behind the scenes, motivating people to do protests,” he added.

’Blockade on Baden Powell was just the beginning’

Some Khayelitsha residents who live next to Baden Powell Drive off the N2 were hesitant to talk to Eyewitness News about service delivery protests on the area.

The residents looked on as police water cannon hosed down the road after the civic group Abahlali baseMjondolo rallied community members to burn tyres and rubbish and block off the roads on Friday morning.

A woman said frustrated residents often vented their anger this way.

The group who organised the demonstration said this was the start of a series of protests.

Their aim was to highlight the lack of service delivery in townships.

Temba Boyi | 10 Hours Ago

The City of Cape Town said on Saturday it listened to the views of a group of residents who want to boycott the World Cup.

Abahlali baseMjondolo launched its Right to the City campaign on Saturday in a bid to get housing for the underprivileged in the Western Cape.

It plans to erect shacks outside Cape Town Stadium a few days before the first match unless adequate housing is allocated to the poor.

However, the city’s Kyllie Hatton said their hands are tied.

“The City of Cape Town recognises and is empathetic to the significant housing challenges that we have in Cape Town. We have a number of interventions in place to deal with this challenge that includes the delivery of housing and upgrading of existing informal settlements,” she said.
