Tomorrow we march in Bizana and in Durban. Our mass protest task team for the Durban march have been busy preparing, and today we were finalising and compiling all the memoranda from our branches into one main memorandum. Each branch has held its own discussions and developed its own memorandum and all these memoranda have been worked into a single document. We will also hand over each of the memoranda received from the branches.

Abahlali to March in Durban and Bizana on Monday
Abahlali baseMjondolo will march to the Durban Mayor Cllr Zandile Gumede on Monday, 26 June 2017. The march will start from Curries Fountain Sports Grounds at 9:00am and finish at 12:00pm at the Durban City Hall. The Memoranda will be handed over to both the Mayor of eThekwini and to the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs. Each branch has carried out its own process to produce its own set of demands. We will be demanding the restoration of our dignity, an end to violent and brutal evictions and land, housing and dignity for all. Continue reading

We March on the Durban City Hall on 26 June 2017
When the new mayor, Zandile Gumede, took office last year we were promised a new era in the City’s relationship with its impoverished residents. We asked for and were promised an end to evictions and repression. We asked for and were promised participatory democracy and participatory development. We asked for and were promised honesty and respect. We asked for and were promised justice for the repression that we had faced in the past, including the armed attacks by ANC supporters in 2009, and the assassinations in 2013 and 2014. On May 11, Karabo Mokoena’s body, burnt and mutilated, was found in a ditch, discarded along with the ordinary detritus of our lives, in Lyndhurst, Johannesburg. Her name took a very public place, along with Anene Booysen, Reeva Steenkamp, Nokuphile Khumalo, Rachel Tshabalala, Nosipho Mandleleni and so many others, in the grim record of what our society does to women. The mother of a 2-week-old baby boy who died, allegedly after inhaling tear gas fired by police during a service delivery protest in Durban in the early hours of Monday morning, wept as she watched his tiny body being carried to the state mortuary van in a white plastic packet.
Friends and family stood silently at her side, their heads bowed.
One held the blue fleece blanket they had wrapped baby Jayden Khoza in, before marching his body to the local police station. Continue reading
