W.Cape shack dwellers call for MEC’s resignation

A group of Khayelitsha residents demanded the resignation of Western Cape Human Settlements MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela on Wednesday.

The small group held a demonstration outside the MEC’s office on Wednesday morning.

“Madikizela you’re an idiot and a puppet”, read one of the placards.

Abahlali baseMjondolo, which led the protest, warned it was just the start of their planned rolling demonstrations at the MEC’s office this week.

The body claims Madikizela failed to give them an assurance that no structures will be demolished even if erected illegally on government land.

The demonstrators mostly came from Mandela Park in Khayelitsha.

They warned that another community would come and protest on Thursday and said that this would continue until the MEC steps down.

Protest Day 1: A call for Madikizela, MEC for Human Settlement to resign

PROTEST DAY ONE

Last week Abahlali baseMjondolo Western Cape made a call to MEC for human settlement MR. Bonginkosi Madikizela to sign an undertaking that he will never, ever again within the Western Cape Province demolish or evict people without any order from the court.

This follows number of illegal activities and intimidation carried by his office lead by him. ABM WC gave him seven working days to respond, and as an organization we were only expecting him to sign an undertaking that says he will not demolish people’s structures without following the legal route. A failure to sign such undertaking simply shows that he is arrogant and thinks that he is above the law.

Eyewitness News: Civic action group threatens protests over evictions

Madikizela is conveniently ignoring the fact that while a land occupation is illegal it is a minor civil offence (trespass) while his own actions, when he authorizes evictions without a court order, are a criminal offence.

Civic action group Abahlali baseMjondolo on Thursday warned of rolling protests if government does not stop evictions and demolitions in the Western Cape.

The group says it wrote to Human Settlement MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela on Wednesday.

The organisation wants him to sign an undertaking within seven days that no structures will be destroyed, even if erected illegally on government land.

However, the MEC is not budging.

Abahlali baseMjondolo claims a number of people in the province are homeless because of demolitions and it intends ending them once and for all.

The organisation’s provincial chairperson Mzonke Bunu said the MEC has no choice but to agree.

“We will make sure that we do protest in front of his office every day so that he must resign,” he said.

However, Madikizela said he will not be bullied.

“For people to write a letter to me to say that I must condone illegal activities its crazy,” he said.

He warned they will continue dismantling illegally erected structures.
